Honoring the Veterans
The Battle of Midway was quite literally “the line in the sand” in the Pacific. Here the U.S. faced an overwhelming enemy, and won. This victory changed the course of the war.
The victory at Midway was made possible because of the immense skill and bravery of the men who fought in the skies, on land, and in and under the sea. The outcome of the battle was truly built on their heroism and sacrifice.
The Battle of Midway was fought in the middle of the ocean. There were no civilian witnesses or townspeople in the streets to celebrate the victory. There are no white crosses marking the graves of the fallen; no tour bus can drive to it. For this reason, it is especially hard for us to connect to what it was like to experience the battle.
Over the years, veterans of the Battle of Midway have shared their stories in interviews, articles and oral histories. We have collected several of them here.
As you read and listen, you will hear from individual veterans about the defining moments of their military careers. We hope that these recollections of the men who were there will transport you to the Battle of Midway.
Once you’ve heard these stories, take the time to listen to the stories of other veterans. All who have served are heroes with fascinating stories of their own.
